Background

The brief was to find a sustainable ‘earthy’, robust material that would sit comfortably with the client’s sustainability policy, helping them to remove plastic packaging while attracting buyers. Our experience and expertise in packaging design and manufacture were key to us being recommended to Rutherford Wren by their design agency.

Approach

Collaborating with a new client and their design agency, mid-lockdown, had its challenges. Understanding the client’s requirements and the designer’s expectations for the reproduction of their illustrative design resulted in us sourcing an unconventional packaging substrate. Drawing on our experience and knowledge of materials, we knew what material precisely would tick all the boxes. Our recommendation, Kraftpak®, a brown uncoated board that combines a rustic look and feel together with high strength, provided a solution that both client and designer met with equal excitement.

Delivery

We first produced a machine ‘wet’ proof, which allowed our client to see and handle the material in printed format, as well as enabling them to test prototypes and to assess overall aesthetic appeal. The machine proofs also provided the designer with a valuable opportunity to tweak their artwork ahead of the main print run.

By taking time to understand the fulfilment side of the project, we were able to remove unnecessary production processes and tools, to achieve a higher yield from the printed sheet. This, in turn, meant a significant reduction in unit price for our client, and a speeded-up fulfilment process.

We are a proud member of the Carbon Capture programme. Our involvement in this programme automatically captured the carbon from the paper manufacturing process*. Carbon is captured by planting trees in new native woodland and conserving ancient woodland here in the UK. As part of this process, the Carbon Capture logo is was clearly displayed on the packaging.

Impact/Result

This is best summed up by the client and their designer as follows: –

“Working with Jas and team was a very simple but thorough process ensuring a high-end quality print. We felt the attention to detail made the project as successful as it was, and they were always incredibly approachable and efficient. Everything was done to a manageable timeline, and communication was spot on at all times”.

“I approached Jas and the team at Penrose Group about a packaging job we had on with a regular customer of ours. Having worked with Jas over the past 15 years from me being at different agencies, I knew he’d be able to deliver, both on price, quality and turnaround. Having met with Jas, he understood the project from the get-go. He was able to recommend a particular type of materiel to run the job on that the customer had ‘dreamt up’, that their existing printer had said they could not guarantee print quality and suggested printing a brown background to replicate earthy tones. Having supplied artwork files to Penrose, Jas drove the machine proofs to my front door and the clients. The customer requested a few tweaks here and there, and Penrose was in constant touch with me, as I had oversight of the ‘art side’ of things, and the job absolutely benefited from having Penrose as the print partner”.
